Insight 15 — A Post and Core Stuck After Fabrication

A brief clinical explanation
Sometimes, after fabricating a post and core — especially when the fit is very precise and the friction is high — removing the piece becomes truly difficult. Pulling with pliers or the usual attempts does not work and may even cause damage or deformation of the core.
A stress-free removal trick
In such cases, a quick and fully controlled technique can simplify the task:
- With a knife-edge bur (without water) you enter the body of the core;
- the bur finds a mechanical engagement inside the core and effectively becomes a «helper handle» for grasping and removing the post and core;
- after the piece is removed, you simply hold the core with your finger and, with a gentle reverse rotation of the bur, the connection is released and the bur detaches easily.
Conclusion
This method is fast, controllable, and puts no pressure on the tooth or the post — we simply use the bur's own engagement to control the core.
