The Effect of Different Surface Preparation Methods on the Bond Strength of Fiber Posts to a Composite Resin Core
This study, published in 2016 in JPD (The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry) by researchers and faculty members of Yazd University, evaluates methods of preparing the fiber post surface before bonding to composite.
Clinical Background and the Problem
In endodontically treated teeth that have lost a large part of the coronal structure, a fiber post is commonly used to retain the core. The interface between the fiber post and the composite core is, however, one of the sites prone to bond failure. For that reason, optimizing the fiber post surface to increase bond strength is of considerable importance.
Methodology (How It Was Assessed)
The study examined the effect of different surface preparation methods on fiber posts:
- Application of silane.
- Use of hydrogen peroxide.
- Use of hydrogen peroxide for different durations (1 and 5 minutes) together with silane.
- Use of phosphoric acid alone or in combination with silane, for 1 and 5 minutes.
Results and Findings
- The effect of silane: among the methods examined, only the application of silane affected bond strength, and silane on its own increases the bond strength of the fiber post, which is consistent with earlier studies.
- The role of the surface layer: in theory, removing the superficial layer of the fiber post (by chemical or mechanical means) to expose more of the fibers and allow a better reaction with silane molecules could increase strength.
- The ineffectiveness of hydrogen peroxide and phosphoric acid: unlike some earlier studies that considered the use of hydrogen peroxide or phosphoric acid before silane to be effective, in this study the groups that used hydrogen peroxide or phosphoric acid (alone or before silane) showed no significant increase compared with the control group. The authors attributed this difference to variation in the surface characteristics of the fiber posts used here compared with those of the earlier investigations.
Overall Conclusion
Before placing composite resin as a core on a fiber post, surface preparation with silane increases bond strength. By contrast, the application time of hydrogen peroxide or phosphoric acid (1 minute or 5 minutes) makes no significant difference, and it is the silane itself that plays the principal role
