I've kept zinc phosphate because it's the only cement that gives real retention, shows up on a radiograph, and never makes a crown impossible to remove — while still counting as a permanent cement
This note is about a recurring chairside decision: which cement I use to seat a crown. Zinc phosphate has left most practices' shelves, but since it's the only cement that puts control over retention in my hands right at the moment of cementation, it still has a place in mine. What follows: my weak-to-strong cementation order, how I use it on implants, and the line between doubting the tooth and doubting the prep.

Why I Still Buy Zinc Phosphate for My Practice
Zinc phosphate has disappeared from most practices' shelves; I still buy it. The reason is that in some of our work, the cement that provides the most retention isn't necessarily the best choice.
Everything else that affects a crown's retention gets decided during the prep and lab stages, and after that it's out of our hands. Cement is the only thing I can still decide, chairside, in that same moment — how much retention it should give. Zinc phosphate makes that possible. -
My Cementation Order
Weak to strong: temporary cement, then zinc phosphate mixed with petroleum jelly, then plain zinc phosphate, then glass ionomer, then resin cement.
The second step — zinc phosphate with petroleum jelly — has been the most useful to me by far. When I want a crown to have real retention but I'm not yet ready to make it permanent, I mix petroleum jelly into the cement. The result is a cement that won't loosen under chewing forces the way a temporary would, but also isn't hard to remove the way a permanent cement is. I judge the amount of petroleum jelly by eye, by the paste's consistency — the more I add, the less retention.
I use plain zinc phosphate once I've made my decision, but still want to be able to remove the crown later if needed. -
On Implants
I cement single-unit implant crowns with zinc phosphate as a permanent cement. Three reasons.
1. No bond to titanium: zinc phosphate doesn't bond to titanium, so retention comes purely from the shape of the abutment. The same property that counts as a weakness on a natural tooth works in our favor on an implant — the day I have to remove the crown, the abutment and prosthesis are safer.
2. Visible on radiographs: the biggest headache with a cement-retained crown on an implant is cement left behind under the gum. With cements that don't show up on a PA, all you can do is hope you cleaned it well. With zinc phosphate, you can check. That check isn't complete, though — it only shows the proximal surfaces, not buccal or lingual — so it doesn't replace careful cleanup, it just helps.
3. Easy to clean off titanium: zinc phosphate is brittle and comes off in flakes, unlike resin cements that have to be scraped away. -
A Crown I'm Not Sure About
There's a distinction here that's easy to mix up.
If I'm not sure about the tooth itself — say it has a suspicious crack, questionable endo status, or unstable periodontal support — zinc phosphate is a good choice. It gives enough retention, and if the crown needs to come out six months later, the cement isn't much of a hassle.
But if I'm not sure about the retention of the prep itself — too much taper, or short walls — zinc phosphate might not be a suitable choice. A cement with no chemical bond relies entirely on the same prep I don't trust; that's when I need an adhesive resin cement instead — though even there, I might still use zinc phosphate during the follow-up period instead of a temporary cement.
In short: doubting the tooth means zinc phosphate; doubting the prep means resin. -
The Bottom Line
I haven't kept zinc phosphate because it's better than newer cements. I've kept it because it's the only cement that gives real retention, shows up on a radiograph, and never makes a crown impossible to remove — while still counting as a permanent cement. In work where not every decision is settled from the start, that combination is useful.
